Wine cask garden

We have just got hold of a wine cask and want to use half for a water garden. We would appreciate ideas as to how to get it clean enough so mozzie eating fish will survive in water as well as plants

I would just give it a good scrub, fill with water for a few days, then empty, fill again. Plant your plants and let the water stand at least 2 days before adding fish.

I wonder whether the wine soaked timbers might affect the fish, I've not used a barrel before but I've been told that the timbers shrink a little when they have been left dry, you may find you have leaks but they should swell again once the timbers have soaked in the water. The link below says that you don't need a lining if you have the patience to prepare the barrel properly.
