There is always so much to do around the garden and in the house.
Are you getting any rain up there....Cheers..MM.

RE: hello from Rockhampton

Hi All,

To answer MM's question - no, we arent getting a drop. To make matters really bad, it has gone from being hot to being hot and *windy*. The wind dries the plants out, then the February sun scorches them - OK if you can get home at lunchtime to mist things, disastrous otherwise.

Yeah, I know I am a serial whinger, but every single time I have been back to Brissie in the last 3 years, it has rained. They still have tough water restrictions and we dont, but it really grinds you down when you have young plants that are trying to make it through their first summer and the wind arrives.

At this point, farmers and gardeners in the parched west of the state would be ready to lynch me in the town square, but its all relative. If it wasnt for the occasional downpour, I wouldnt have bothered with rainforest plants - we get just enough rain in Rocky to seduce us into thinking that we can have the tropical wonderland. With at least two (additional) shire councils planning to pump water from the barrage, perhaps its time to accept the harsh reality of the environment we live in ....

Fingers crossed, the forecast at least sounds promising this week. We've had showers in Mackay last week I'm told and this morning there has been about 12 mm. The creek at the acreage is dry, the dam too low to pump. At least the birds get a drink at the horse trough (no horses in residence); it runs off a shed tank.

Still waiting for some rain!

I guess thats Oz for you - we are all eagerly awaiting rain, and its sweeping people away in their cars in Sydney.

RE: hello from Rockhampton

Well yes being busy is sometimes good ....Especially if one is energetic enough to handle it well.
???

Getting the garden here in a blo.....mess at the moment with builders working here at the house . The crocodile in the water feature accidentaly got a biff on the head with the end of a piece of timber and broke his nose off.

Getting a replacement is not that easy .

Well crocodile tears won't help either.

good to see everyone is still sending in posts .
bye garden_worm
Good place this Rocky !

rarrgh, good on you. Wish that meant our paddock also north of Rocky got some but surely I would have heard by now.

26mm in Mackay this morning by 7, with another 19 later. Very localised, looking at the radar.

RE: hello from Rockhampton

Hi Garden worm, Artie and others
We aren't getting much in Yeppoon either. Rain that is. I thought last week when we were getting a few showers I wouldn't need to water but the topsoil looks so dry. Even my gumbi gumbi tree is not looking good. I don't have a front fence and I somtimes wonder if that's part of the reason the topsoil dries out so quickly.

Patchiness a feature of the rain around Rocky. Our paddock off the highway (south of the prison) has reverted to its 80s name of Arid Acres as the showers have been stopping at the turnoff....nothing has trickled into the dam tho' the upper reaches of the creek have filled (that's on someone else's place).

What sort of soil do you have, Jan?

RE: hello from Rockhampton

Hi Rose,

Sorry to hear that you didnt get the rain - I am also astounded as to the patchy nature of rainfall in Rocky - it can be bucketing down on one side of the river and barely sprinkling on the other !

For all that, my place in North Rocky did really well out of last weekends downpour. Only downside is that I have to get my gardening out of the way early - next door's little terrors like to run around their backyard screaming for much of the morning. I could be wrong, but I dont remember being that loud as a child.

Its not only parents who eagerly await the return of school next week :)

Cheers,

Artie

Some of Gracemere has done very well and there are green roadsides and lawns round.
We are 6klms out of town and got half of what fell in town but it was lovely and kept coming in dribs and drabs every day for nearly a week so it all soaked in nicely.
No run in the dam here either Rose, but the little dams above are all full so we should get a run on the next storm, hopefully.

Hello to all the Central Queenslanders, seem to be a few of us .

RE: hello from Rockhampton

Hi Rose
Sorry for taking so long to get back. I am not sure what sort of soil I have but it isn't sandy or clay. Over the last few years I have added blood and bone and mulch and it seems to do alright and when I weeded last week, the top was dry but there still seemed to be moisture underneath. I am hoping we'll get quite a bit of rain from latest cyclone. It all helps. Jan
