dwarf dates again!

Some of you may remember some time ago I posted something about us managing to successfully transplant a several-metre-tall dwarf date palm (I think it's a roebelenii) and we have since repeated that with another one. You'll have to rely on your memory because it doesn't seem to be here anymore (the posting, not the palm). Anyway, we're at it again this weekend. This time we're travelling quite a distance to buy up to 8 dwarf dates and its going to be a scorcher too. We must be mad. I'll let you know how we go with them.

Yes I do remember your posting Donna. I also have to agree with you sometimes you have to travel a far distance to get what you want.... Gosh!!! imagine them coming to you the cost of delivery would be staggering.. I wish you and your Palms well and at least you have the right weather for planting them ( I think )..You all have a wonderful week-end planting those palms, and I will be looking forward to hearing how they go....Cheers..MM.

Good cosmic dates for planting dates : Thursday 23 and Friday 24 Feb. Give them a really good settling in watering and feed and water deeply again on the 4th. Avoid planting anything on the 29th when there is an eclipse in a very drying sign.

Good luck with your palms Donna! Glad to hear you had success with the other ones.

I saw a lovely Dwarf date in front of a shop, asked if I could get the seeds and now have a styro-foam box full of seedlings!

Sorry everyone for not getting back to you earlier. I don't seem to get emails anymore alerting me to your reponses.
Anyway, we went up to get the palms but only managed one, as it was a very hot, humid day, the ground was difficult to dig and the rootball was huge. It took four or five hours to dig out. And it was a task to get it on the ute, taking three men and myself to do it. We swore never to do this again! The trip home took almost 4 hours.
We planted it as soon as we'd rested and it looks terrific. The very next day we both thought we will go back up and try to get more. Its kind of like giving birth: you remember its hard work but you forget just how hard and painful it is so you do it again. My husband and I are gluttons for punishment because we went up yesterday and got two more! They were equally as difficult to get out, each taking 4 hours. Again it was a task getting them both on the ute but we had more help this time so we managed okay. We did the whole thing in one day, getting up at 4.30am and arriving back home at 9.15pm. It was a long day and we had to get up early today to plant the things. We love the effect, but right now I don't think we'll do that again (although as I wrote that I thought yes we will!). We saved quite a few hundred dollars doing it this way. And, yes, it is the right time to plant. They should settle in by winter. Thanks everyone for your interest.
Donna.

Wonderful to hear that Donna. Yes I agree with you about being gluttons for punishment.
All gardeners are don't you think, look what some put up with four Seasons in one day, no rain ( Or too much )
Getting bitten by every insect known to man, up at ungodly hours of the morn to water due to water restrictions
And travelling for hours to get something we really like then there is the digging, weeding, mowing.
Enough said ....!!Well Done !! On your achievement.......Cheers..MM.

Just got a call from a nursery telling me that they have the kind we want at about 2m tall and they want over $400 each! For that price I'd want a 3m one and they'd have to plant the thing. I am over the hard digging but it would take some work getting over paying $400!
