I often go to members pages to see where they are in Australia ie zone or region. It is interresting to see what is grown where, and, if answering a post, it is very helpful to know what climatic region they are in so that the advice given is relevant to that climate. When zone is given as just nsw or central qld it covers a pretty diverse range of climate. I realise people may want to retain their anonymity but it would be great to see just a little more detail on the member pages (maybe nearest major city) What do other members think? Robyn

I agree Robyn , nothing worse than wanting to answer someones posting and they put WA now that's a big place and what grows down South would not grow up North...

Same as Queensland here 32 kms South of Brisbane we get nights as low as 3 degrees so we can grown things that they cannot grow up in Cairns or North of Brisbane meaning closer to the Sunshine Coast and when they put SE Queensland well that could mean anything I would rather see via Ipswich or Toowoomba even Gympie, as it can get much colder and hotter there than South of Brisbane so that would give us a better idea.

So I think it is a terrific idea.....Cheers..MM.

Robyn, I think you make a great point, and while privacy is indeed a big issue these days, you've given folks good reasons to be 'just a little' more specific as to their location.

Yes Robyn, I agree whole-heartedly with you. I don't think people have to give away their identity but a little more info would be great. I also think it feels more friendly if you have at least a vague idea of who you're talking to.
Cheers,
Dee.

I agree too but one thing Robyn, I know on your member page you describe your temps & climate but you just mention Qld, Aust :)

RE: member pages

I NEVER refer to a person's membership page when I am answering their questions. I figure if the details are not in their posting, or on the bit at the top of their posting, then I don't know. Life's too short to be wasting time checking their details for them if they can't take the time to supply them.
I would never hesitate to give false personal details here or anywhere else on the net, unless it was directly related to our business, and secure, or directly related to societies of which I am a member, or totally private.
Those few people who have met me can confirm that I do infact exist, and I do infact live where I say I live, etc,. etc. My privacy is something I value very much.
Having said that - I do occasionally refer to membership pages to see how long a member has been a member. There have been a few whacko posts, or offensive ones, and it is interesting to find that these are newly joined members. I sometimes suspect the offensive ones to be regular members hiding behind an alias and a different membership, in order to have a flame.
Fortunately they are few and far between. For the most part people here are nice and friendly and don't pose a personal privacy threat :-)

Oops Goldhills, serves me right for not checking! I am between Brisbane and Ipswich in the area which no longer gets rain but does occasionally get frosts (although we are high enough to miss them) Many people new to this area end up with most of their gardens wiped out by the cold every 3 or 4 years so I see first hand how the wrong advice can lead to people becoming despondent about gardening - especially if they are just beginning. Now Ive got to see if I can change my member page.

RE: member pages

If I just went by you're description it sounds like you live near me :) We don't seem to get rain anymore either, couple of light showers that didn't wet the rain gauge is all in the last 3 to 4 weeks.

"in the area which no longer gets rain but does occasionally get frosts"

I do occassionally check member pages as I have a lousy memory and I do like finding out a little about the people I "talk" to.

RE: member pages

I too should update my member page. Like goldhills and plantsplus, I live in an area that according to locals no longer has a regular rainfall pattern, relying now on thunderstorms for most of the water it gets. Plus there's the frost on winter nights. I've been told to expect a bad frost only every few years--but one bad frost is all it takes to kill the more sensitive plants! I'm rather dreading the winter nights, which will be significantly colder than they were in Brisbane. (And, astonishingly, colder than most winter nights in Melb too.) It seems that the warm and sunny winter days actually exacerbate the effects of the night-time frosts. (But they make the spirits soar, unlike Melb's cold, grey winter days.)

Because I've lived here only a few months, I don't know which sections of my small block will be most affected by frost and which will have some protection from the buildings and/or orientation (N, S, E, W). All my plants are still in pots, waiting to be planted out. I hoped to do this over the next few months as I've slowly been turning lawns into garden beds, but am worried that many of my Brisbane-sourced plants won't survive their first truly cold winter in the ground. So I might end up waiting until spring, but the poor things might not have time to stretch their roots before the summer heat grinds them down (sigh). It never occurred to me that I could be in a hotter (than Melb) climate that has such cold nights in winter--what a double whammy!

RE(2): member pages

On second thought, after seeing all the info that I'd have to update in order to change just my location, I've decided it's just not worth the effort. Truly, could they make it any more cumbersome!

RE: member pages

i noticed the majority of yous are from QLD.

i find very little from my region in sydney / suburbs
i garden in 2 places.. one near the coastal suburbs and one one in inner west suburbs. If yous recall that little incident about 2 14 yr old girls murdering a disabled taxi driver.. well the taxi was dumped just outside my street (at the inner suburbs place). We had police that day combing through our suburb interrogating us for answers. I was just shocked about the whole affair itself conducted by 14 year olds... what is the world coming to. Anyway back to the topic i fully support the idea about quoting your region , climate zones. Its very helpful for me, no doubt.

Well there you go! For some reason, Robyn I'd thought you were from up innisfail way, so you've proven your own point! lol

RE: member pages

Referring to the area people live now doesn't always work in regards to their advice - I have lived and gardened in the NW of WA, the SW of WA, Central Qld, North, Central and Southern NT, Sydney, temperate NSW and now temperate Vic...

How is our privacy threatened when we use an alias anyway? Even if we showed which town we are from I doubt anyone would know who we are. But having said that, I'm not saying mine either but that's because I can't get into it to change it. I come from the south coast NSW. Have you ever tried to find out exactly where someone is from? Without knowing their full name it's near impossible.

RE: member pages

Well I look at it this way. If we send other members our spare seeds, bulbs, and cuttings like a lot of us do, myself included so lots of the GardenWeb Members know my name and address..the reason I sign off as MM is because it is short so much easier to press the keys twice than nine times which I would have to do if I used my Christian Name....Cheers...MM.

Doona
If you go to your member page, then to "File" & click "Edit with open office" you can edit your entry. Actually I've done it for you.
