| I am chasing some plant ideas for a garden of the early 1970's to match the house.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated |

You may get some ideas from your local Library. Or your local Council they would have that kind of information I should imagine.. Also try the Botanic Gardens Best of Luck ...Misty |

| One place to start is to look at books that detail houses of a particular historical period. In addition to describing the features of a house, they often detail what a garden of that particular era would have looked like - the layout, how it fitted with the house, what would have been planted. We are restoring our house and I have found lots of information on gardens in books whose primary purpose is to detail the interiors of houses. You could also try searching out old editions of gardening magazines such as "Your Garden" or even Australian 'Home Beautiful' at the library, or a university library. Architecture/design/urban planning libraries at universities are a good source too. I've found some great books on gardens in these, e.g. original Edna Walling books. Here is a book that I've read that may be of use: Australia's quarter acre : the story of the ordinary suburban garden / Peter Timms. Best of luck. |

| You could try a modern native garden - this would emulate the 1970's look, but will be more interesting and functional with today's choice of plants. I have tried this on my 1970s house to good effect so far (still a long way to go, but gardens always evolve). The key with native gardnes however is to choose plants which naturally grow in similar microclimates - very important! |

| Searching back through the annals of my memory, I'd also add lots of my mother's homemade pots (remember that earthy, hippy, crafty phase so many mothers went through?) and tons of chipbark. My whole childhood seemed to consist of my parents spreading chipbark around. |
