elkhorn help needed - Redcliffe QLD

I have an elkhorn that has grown into a ball about 40 cms wide. It is about 8 years old, and has been healthy and flourishing all that time.

About 3 months ago it became infested with flying ants, who also nested in it. I asked at the nursety and followed their advice, which was to spray thouroughly with white oil, wait a few hours for the pests to clear, submerge the plant in fresh clear water (I used a trough) and do this several times then rehang the plant.

Followed all instructions, pretty soon all the leaves died and fell off. It has been a bald ball ever since (This was December). I was excited to find a single leaf regrowing last week, but to my dismay this leaf has vanished (fallen off? Eaten? ) just gone.

Can anyone tell me if I could be doing something, or giving it up as dead???! The 'eyes' are all intact and have not come loose, and I still keep it moist not wet, and have given it it's monthy banana peel as usua, not sure what else to do. Any help would be greatfully accepted. Thanks!

g'day augietoo,

for starter with any ferns the use of white is used sparingly eg.,. in the case of mealy bugs, thrips, scale maybe but sparingly and at app' 25% the recommended rate, the oil then will still burn the fronds.

for me i would have use and insectacide based spray and poured it into the plant to soak it well that should have gotten rid of the termites. can't see white oil treatments as being effective termite treatments?

anyhow all you can do now is put it in a nice bright warm spot out of the winds and monitor it keep it well watered, with the elk there is a chance that they could also still grow ne growths on old or dead frond material. percervere for now and wouldn't recomend any feeding until new growth is going strong and then if you realy want to a fish based liquid applied at around 25% the normal rate.

i'm down in d-bay right now up to you but if i'm coming your way would take a look at it for you a picture beats a thousand words, send an e/mail from my web link if need be.

Hi Len

I have movedit already, so it's sitting in a 'good place' but doing nothing... it remains intact and is holding it's ball shape fine. The papery edges seem more papery to me, but then I am probably being a bit paranoid about the poor thing right now!

If you are close by always and it still is unwell in a few weeks, I might take you up on your offer!

Meanwhile, I watch and wait...

By the way, I have 2 stags growing nearby to the affected on and they are just fine. It's just this one affected... !
