Ned Kelly passionfruit (grafted)

| My husband recently planted several grafted ned Kelly passionfruit vines and I have just noticed that the root stock is shooting off lots of lovely green leaves, while the top grafted leaf really hasn't done anything at all... It's not dead, but it hasn't grown much either!
Should I remove the growth from the root stock or will it be ok to leave it as is?
Thanks in advance

Hi Ange, Remove all suckers asap and do not dig close to these vines as they have a tendency to sucker at some distance from the parent if the roots are disturbed. |

Ok - I beg to differ here. The root stock WILL become a problem eventually, BUT it is absorbing nutrient to feed the rest of the plant. My NK didn't start growing until I decided to leave the root stock growth intact. When the grafted plant took off, I cut off ALL the root stock, and kept cutting it back wherever it emerged. The passionfruit plant had one fantastic year, and then faded away. The rootstock does come back everywhere that the roots have been disturbed. It suckers like crazy throughout the garden. I didn't deal with my old one as we sold up and shifted. When I saw a worse one at the new house, I went out and bought roundup. Now if you knew me you would know that I was desperate! I sprayed every little plant that was coming up in the lawn up to 10 metres from the parent plant. It took 2 years to kill this beastie. I would NEVER, EVER buy another grafted passionfruit again! The bad news is that there is a root stock passionfruit plant growing at our new holidayhouse :-(((( |

| When I first saw this post I thought you were going to plant a grafted NK and I was about to write DON'T DO IT! DON'T DO IT! We planted one when we lived in Floreat - you will know the house - it is the one covered in whatever the passionfruit root-stock was. We sold the house and moved to the other side of Australia, but I'm sure the b*%$#y things will start shooting in my garden over here... Ditto to what Spiraxis said. |
