Growing NZ Natives in SEQld

G'day all
Has anyone in SEQld had any luck in growing the NZ Lancewood(pseudopanax crassifolius)? I have grown several from seed in 2004, and all grew nicely until a couple of weeks ago when every one just up and died! I had them in pots, and in the garden, and in sun, semi-shade, and total shade. Methinks the heat and humidity maybe just too much for them. It's odd that they thrived and survived their first summer here as seedlings...
Also, I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has successfully grown the Puka (meryta sinclairii) here in SEQld.
Cheers.

Is the Puka the one that has sticky seeds which stick to the birds? If so - yes, I did grow it for some time in a pot but it eventually (3 years or so ) died. I have some lancewood seeds in the fridge but am not very hopeful of their survival - They need cold-wet not hot-wet which encourages fungal infections that they have not evolved to tolerate. I have noticed that a lot of plants as young seedlings will tolerate adverse conditions which kill them when they are more mature - I guess that is a survival mechanism to give them a greater chance to establish.
