| looks as though iVillage has been selling email addresses to their "affilliates"
the link below is in american forum and has a link to the opt out option on iVillage
If you don't want your email address sold to junk/spam mailers, then I'd suggest you opt out. I did.

I agree with you there Len, could refresh it too. I don't worry about things like that as my email program grabs all the unidentified ones And put them in the junk I don't even look at them I just delete so not a problem...MM. |

| I think you can safely say that as soon as you subscribed to the forum, your email would be 'shared' with affiliates. How many people even read the privacy policy on subscribing - I know I don't. If I had, I would have taken this option when I first got here. Since they have included the opt out option in the initial process of subscribing ( i.e. read the policy) I'd say its too late. Most people with emails or websites are going to get spammed. You can however, approach your server if it gets too bad and get them to dump anything you identify as nuisance before it even gets to your inbox. |

| Just because a company says they don't onsell your address doesn't mean their staff don't do it on the sly. I once registered for a hot mail with Excite.com and within 24 hours I had 200 spams. Now someone passed my address on. Most of these companies like say iVillage rely on your curiosity and "You never know, I must open it because it may be something I want" attitude. I suppose most of you out there know about tracking cookies or tracking software loaded into your computer without your knowledge. So you unsubscribe. So what, you may still be sending info back to that site unless YOU remove the offending cookie/software. I have 2 spyware removers, 2 antivirus programs, a mail washer and a firewall and I still removed a trojan only the other day. The reason for two of each is what one misses the other may find. The trojan got in embedded in an email from a well respected manufacturer. A simple rule of thumb. Turn Preview Pane off permanently and If you don't recognise the sender SHIFT Delete it without opening it. Doug. |

| my junk e/mails have increased since i used the opt out can't say for sure that this caused it but looks sus' to me. it was the same with some of that stuff that used to come saying go here to un-subscribe it just seemed to refresh your addy and you got more of them. i agree with doug not many read the privacy rules me i don't bother reckon you work out the risk put protection procedures in place and cop it sweet if you want to use their site for your entertainment it's called "paying the piper". just don't give too many personnal details and use a spurious surname. the only other alternative is don't venture online if your personnal privacy is that important, big bro' knows you are here anyway even if you don't go online, each time you use a cordless phone or mobile or fax they know might have to revert to using carrier pigeons hey lol? len |

| excellent Advice Doug, There are several good Spyware programs you can download and trial. I use Spysweeper and used it for a year before deciding to buy it $19 - I can now get free upgrades and it has caught quite a few trojans. I run it to check every morning at 2 am. Added to that VET virus protection is pretty good. One thing I am struggling with at present is my server has been bought out and the new server doesn't appear to provide spam filtering like the old one did so I'm getting inundated. I have the flu at present but plan to phone them as soon as I can, but it is worth checking with your email provider that they do have spam filtering and anyone with a website should try to use a server that allows you to set your own mail filtering. I used to get masses of email addressed to a@website.com b@website.com and so on until I was able to filter out anything that was addressed to @website.com Cheers Linda |
