Wood Chip Under New TURF?

Posted by nails_n_glue (My Page) on

Hi

I have an area to turf but not just yet as I want to put a shed in place before laying the turf around the same area. The shrubs I had cleared for the shed spot has generated a lot of wood chip (Actually loads and loads).

I was thinking I could lay the wood chip over the exposed soil to prevent dust/erosion/mud. And when time comes to lay the turf just mix the wood chip (use a tiller) into the soil.

Is this a bad idea? I am concerned that the decaying matter under turf might cause problems with the turf. I have read it can withhold nitrogen from soil. What does this mean? Is there chance of fungal attack? Are there any other suggestions?

Thanks.

you could use straw or hay and then after the construction level up a bit and lay the turf as the hay/straw will break down quicker.

The wood chip under the turf may make it hard to get the turf even particularly when the chip starts to break down you may find the turf will be all humps and bumps. This would also depend on how thick the chip is.
