Living and Gardening in New Zealand

Thinking of moving to New Zealand from East Coast USA for better gardening and more land hopefully. I will need to be employed - profession: Architect. Any suggestions for areas I should look into for good gardeing weather and be gainfully employed?

Thanx,
Axis

Hi Axis, as much as it hurts to say it, head north, Auckland, Cambridge. I would never live there myself but it is warmer, more suited to a tropical garden.

Why wouldn't you live in Auckland? Too crowded? I do not know much about New Zealnd - just started to read about it. How about the Wellington area - would I be able find employment there? I am not a big fan of tropical plants - I like growing tulips, daffodils and crocuses too.

I am also hoping the sale of my house in Massachusetts will enable me to buy a house in New Zealand with atleast an acre or two of land. I do not like big cities anymore.

Wellington, the capital, is a perfect climate for these type of plants. The only pain in the ... is the Southerly wind. I don't know about employment in your feild you don't necessary have to be in the city. Look North of Wellington, still within commuting distance, North of Upper Hutt to the Wairarapa. You should be able to find a lot of info on the net. Also look at Christchurch, NZ's garden city.

Hi Axis,
My parents have just moved to the Bay of Islands on the East coast of North Island & they're just raving about the volcanic soil, warm weather, predictable rain fall etc which make gardening a dream. Sadly I am not able to join them yet :-(
