New Zealand Gardener mag

What do others think of this magazine. I used to have a subsciption to it but not any more. I feel it has lost its way - rather like Maggies Garden show. Too perfect gardens, people - don't know what it is but it doesn't have its old charm for me anyway.
Cheers all

HI there,

I totally agree Rosarae, Although I think for the amount of keen gardeners in NZ there aren't nearly enough television shows about gardening in fact none now but I do think Maggies just seem to concentrate on the very huge gardens like two acres with pots of money, but thats not how the majority of us keen gardeners are and the same goes for the NZ gardener, It can be very rewarding seeing what can be achieved without the big budget. Cheers

I have been getting this magazine on and off for several years now. But now every issue looks like the last. In fact my October issue has been laying on my coffee table for nearly 3 weeks, unread. It just doesn't inspire me any more.

Took armfuls of the mag away with me when I had to spend a couple of days at a motel. Looked specifically for pictures I could copy and use in my garden centre. Found about 6 that were any good. Rest....arty farty rubbish. Found too when I looked thru 5 years of them that the same writers, gardens, ideas pop up. Boring twee rubbish! I have stopped buying and reading it.
Landscap...haven't seen you on the proffesional page lately..Glenn

My subsription to NZ Gardener runs out in 2 months time, I'm not going to renew, I believe often the best gardens are the ones done with the love of gardening, not the most expensive items one can find.

I have been recycling pavers from one area of my garden to another, takings cuttings and swapping plants, now thats more fun.

I totally agree with all of the above! I used to subscribe a few years ago but now wouldn't touch it... I think it is trying to be like a Home and Garden mag, including recipes and table setting ideas!!! Needs to go back to the love of gardening as it was a few years ago... I feel teh same about Maggies Garden Show and haven't watched it for the past few series. I am in the horticultural industry and am a garden writer. Philippa

Yep-- arty farty is a very apt term! and my subscription is not getting renewed. Far too much focus on style, why can't we have topical stuff like GM, natives and ecologically sound stuff to grow. Twee twerps get far too much exposure in all these mags, same chaps turn up in them all

I quite like it! coming from England where until recently you couldn't get away from ubiquitous cottage/heritage gardening (old fogey gardening done to death for too many decades- an entire century in fact), I'm delighted to be surrounded by the enthusiasm that New Zealanders have for contemporary design, and especially the funky/quirky edge that is New Zealand's special trademark. I love Schleranthus! bromeliads! Palms! Easter Island moai! Mauve stucco walls! so there!

I don't like this magazine, sorry. Too full of frost-tender, spikey subtropical plants and over-tidy gardens. Not enough roses, annuals or perennials. I love those English garden magazines, they are full of colour and the sorts of flowers we grow in Christchurch. Maybe we need a South Island garden magazine!
