Totara as candidate for clay soil?

Posted by gondwana 9USDA/17aSunst (My Page) on

I struggle with hard clay soils, and am trying to determine which are the best candidates from among Kiwi natives. Have had success with Kauri and Kahikatea, but am worried about planting my prized Totara cultivars, as well as Matai and such.

RE: Totara as candidate for clay soil?

hi there--you should be able to grow the totaras in the clay without problems. Our garden is all heavy clay and we have 5 totaras quite happy, they are thriving in the wind, rain, sun and clay along side all our other NZ natives. It will help if you give them a good 5-6 inch deep mulch ( not right against the trunk) and a feed of blood and bone.
