Hi, so good to find a New Zealand forum. I'm a new gardener in Wellington, trying to cram information about gardening in as fast as I can. Been on the net all winter, such a lot to learn! I have a small garden on the hills in Wellington, mostly in shade, reasonably sheltered, get some of the Southerlies but not full blast. Have got some Sweet Woodruff seed, and cannot find any New Zealand references or information on it here in NZ. Anyone grow it? Would you tell me your experiences with it?

Hi, your location sounds good for s.woodruff (Galium oderatum). The seeds should be sown in late autumn or winter, in a moist shady spot 1-2 cm deep spaced about 5-10 cm apart. The seeds will take between 2-3 months, to germinate and will need to be kept moist over this period. I recommend starting in pots or trays, because due to the long germination period the plot may be invaded by weeds before the seeds have come up.. IMPORTANT:-the pots should be kept outside over winter, the cold stratification may be essential for the initiation of germination..

I have some seeds planted but I'll get back to you on how they do....still waiting...

Hope this was helpful
