Neopaxia australasica

Hello from Germany!

I wonder whether you can tell me more about this plant.
The tag said "Neopaxia australasica" and "New Zealand Scented Lawn" (in german).
I'm not sure whether it was labelled correctly when I bought it last year, and whether the name possibly is a fantasy product of clever marketing or a true name.

The plant is very small, looking like thin, round gras no taller than 1 cm. It flowers with tiny white scented flowers (5 mm in diameter) which have daisy shape and five petals. It seems to prefer semi shade and moist soil, at least that's where it grows well in my garden spreading like lawn and remaining green during winter.

None of my books lists it, so I tried to find some information on the web, but all the plants shown under the name above are looking different, that is they seem much taller and their leaves are broad in comparison with my plant's.

Hi from my book New Zealand Native Plants, Yvonne Cave and Valda Paddison

Neopaxia australasica
syn Claytonia australasica
A low creeping perennial with short narrow fleshy leaves. In summer it is covered in small starry-petalled white to pink flowers.
Found in a variiety of habitats in lowland to alpine areas from the central North Island southward.
Needs a moist gritty soil and is best grown in full sun.

It is found in parts of Australia too.

you are right there is not much about it on the net
have you tried looking under the syn name Claytonia
I have never grown this plant.

Hi Heather,
thanks for your answer, and nice to see you again!

I'm wondering about the "fleshy leaf" part. When I read "fleshy" I think of succulents. My plant has definitely no fleshy leaves, they are more like a thin plastic string or wire.

I've planted Neopaxia in between the steps of a little flight of stairs in my garden, together with other tiny creepers like Thymus praecox 'Minor' and Mentha requirenii. Parts of the staircase are in full sun, others are totally shady. I noticed that Neopaxia actually preferred the more shady parts while it turned brown in sun, despite regular watering.
I imagine it would make a great filler for joints in between stepping stones and pavings.

Well, I searched google with Neopaxia, Claytonia, even with Montia, all with and without australasica, alas to no success. Claytonia virginica is similar on the photos, but far too big in reality to be my little creeper.

As I bought the plant in a standard garden center I'm surprised to find so little information on the net. Also I've tried german, usamerican and newzealandish forums so far...
