Swan Plants and Monarch Butterflies

My son asked me how Monarch Butterflies find swan plants since his Mother just brought him one and he has planted it.Caught out I said by smell but then realised that I havn't got a clue.Can any one help me.Is it pure luck by just flying around or what .Does anyone know.
