Exchanges and pests

I heard a news item this week about some plants in the Auckland area being 'declared' as potential pest species. Agapanthus and some palms.

I know that certain pest plants in the north are dear treasures further south (and expensive!!!) eg Watsonia and Smilax. And the south has its own monsters eg Patterson's Curse aka 'borage' (Echium) and Oenothera.

But there are no warnings on the exchange site - which is a pity.

The other part of this minor rant is around getting more traffic to the exchanges so sharing can get going and we can learn how to pack/send seeds and plant material effectively. Or are there other more popular local sites for this?

(You can tell who finally found the Exchange link!!! moi. And also finally found my ancient post which spike moved back in the pre-iVillage days. I never did know where it went. Perhaps I just found 'Disney'?)

Back to Google and the hunt for a lively set of forums locally. As a non-specialist garden I'd be delighted to find a busy place with lots of ideas flowing.

RE: Exchanges and pests

there was an exchange connected to....... gardens.co.nz........ I am not sure if it is still in the links page.

Not only are the aggies heading for the hit list but the Bangalow palm, Date palm are self seeding all over the place.
Dracena Draco, Prunus campanulata, well several Prunus are heading that way, fine to give the Tuis a feed but the seeds are dropped in the native bush .
Never mind, if the bird flu arrives, the asparagus ferns smilax and the moth plant will take over NZ

There might be a weed link on the above garden site mentioned
happy gardening

Add Cornus capitata to the list. I've seen big stands way back in the bush. All taken by birds. And barberry... mutter, grumble

Still, if it isn't the birds providing the transport it'll be the rats and mousies, I'm sure. If we could persuade the avian flu to jump across to rodents before getting to us there'd be a lot more food and good health in the world.

I'll go hunting for the link. Thanks kiwi oz.
