native ground covers

There is a small native tree area and I would like to plant the most appropriate native ground covers underneath - trees are kowhai, ti kouka (cabbage tree) and akeake. The area involved is quite small. I want something easy care and hardy although I will give it tender loving care to start it off. Any thoughts. The area has a few severe frosts most years.

Have a look at conditions a native daphne likes. Pimelea prostrata.

RE: native ground covers

We use pratia and renga renga as ground covers on our extensive native plantings----the garden is just had it's 2nd birthday and there are 4500 trees and shrubs, mostly native. In severe frosts the rengas will get frostbite but they don't die--look a bit tatty but take off again as the spring arrives. I cut off the first flowers as they die off and then feed with nitrophoska---6-8 weeks later we get a 2nd flush of flowers---sun or shade it doesn't matter.
Good luck, Sandra

If it is a moist area, native Gunnera ground cover is good, it has little red berries and small roundish leaves.
Leptinella also a ground cover is great too, it has a few varieties, with diffrerent leaf sizes.
