Anyone in New Zealand Vermicomposting?

Posted by vleachman Wellington NZ (My Page) on

Hi,

I was just wondering how many New Zealand gardeners also vermicompost. I've got compost piles but I didn't like the fruit fly investations arising from my kitchen waste whenever I added to the pile so I went worm farming as well. Is anyone else in NZ doing this - I've talked about it at work but they all think I'm nuts!

This is a roundabout sort of reply:

there's a chap in Ngaio, Wellington. I think his name's Treadwell but I can't find him in the phone book.

He does courses on organic gardening for the Hutt WEA. Part of his enterprise is tree pruning and another part is growing open-pollinate seeds for sale commercially. He uses a 'worm farm' to dispose of the chippings from pruning, and the compost as the basis for his certified organic seeds. A bit bigger than a 44 gallon drum...

If you check with the WEA they can probably advise you if he is doing a class this semester, or how you might contact him.

When I took the class,I found him easy-going and knows his stuff.

Check out the library, too. There are some good recent (Aussie) publications on vermiculture for all sizes of enterprise.

I use tyre towers to put my kitchen and garden waste in that become full of worms, does that count?
