I will be visiting New Zealand in March. Can you recommend any public gardens or good nurseries north of Auckland and in the Coromandel peninsula. I live in California and we all have been enjoying the New Zealand scenery in "Lord of the Rings".

Hi there Pat

Hav'nt seen lord of the rings yet but hope to soon (hate crowds heheh) I just posted before about a really cool tropical garden in Helensville just north of Auckland, it's a family garden and is extremely impressive to visit,it's a tropical rainforest right here in Auckland!!. And they sell the seed for most of the plants you see.well worth a visit (NZ$5 per person..which I'm sure is equivelant to the price of a packet of gum in the USA hehehe)

Have a lovely holiday..I am a keen gardener myself ..if you have any other questions don't hesitate to email...

Daniel

Thanks Daniel for the information and the offer of help. A rainforest garden sound delightful and exciting. We have a Mediterrean garden climate but I do have sections that I give a fair amount of water so getting unusual seeds would really add to the fun of our holiday. It is impressive how many New Zealand natives are now available over here and most of the time we don't realise they are from your country. My camelias are in full bloom(early Spring here) and doing really well this year. Do you grow any? We sometimes visit Nuccio's nursery near Los Angeles. They developed a lot of the varieties available here and I believe you also have them in your country.

Hi Pat, I will find some addresses and websites for you in a day or two, friend has a book on gardens to visit , Ill borrow it and get back to you. I saw L.O.T Rings on Friday and enjoyed it . Todays paper had an article showing the areas where it was filmed. March is a nice time of the year to travel here, school holidays over and the weather is usually settled warm and fine, cheers Yvonnej

This would be a bit late for you Pat, West Lynn Garden Society at 73 Parker Avenue, New Lynn is a good place to visit, it is 4 1/2 acres of meandering paths and in Summer a Monarch Butterfly House. It is run by volunteers and considering that their numbers are low, they cope well.

It is truely a hidden treasure and one not to be missed!
Put it on your list for next time, Pat!

Raine

Hi there, shame you aren't coming south of Auckland. I know of many gardens that would jsut task your breath away, lower North Island and South Island....maybe next time?
