N. merrilliana and its hybrids grow slowly but when they are right size to produce a good sized pitcher they do and they are fascinating. N. insignis is also a huge pitcher, I would say almost as large as merrilliana and this hybrid has potential of getting huge. This better be grown on a bench or shelf as this one would prefer to rest its pitchers on a solid surface. Alata x truncata grows like a weed. Depending on the alata form, expect long tubular pitchers about a foot on the average and lots of them. Lots of light as alatas like sun! This will grow very well in a hanging basket with good lighting to keep the leaves compact.

Pip, didn't see your post, sorry. But, know that it's not a "3-in-1" grafted tree. What he has are three rooted cuttings stuck into one pot. Three completely separate trees growing in one pot, one of which is very vigorous and will crowd out the other two and eventually kill them (so, I guess it will probably end up with your recommendation, if punky tries to continue to grow 3 trees in one pot). No need to kill anything. Punky really should remove two of the cuttings and re-pot them in their own pots. And, what Kippy said. It really is a very perfect example of "you get what you pay for". These are cuttings of more ornamental types of citrus trees, which is fine if that's what you want - a pretty plant that is rather high-maintenance inside, and produces pretty, but either inedible or marginal fruits. And, punky, again, Kippy has given you some good advice - don't shoot the messengers you asked us about these cultivars we've told you what they are, where to go to find out more about them, and what we, as experienced citrus growers would do. It is entirely up to you as to what you wish to do with your 3 cuttings. Wishing you well, whatever it is you decide. Patty S.

OK I got a Don Juan! YAY! I wanted one! Thank you for the help! Now as for the other. You guys are getting closer, I think. But Im not sure those are it tho. Heres why...I read up R. bracteata,Rosa multiflora, and rosa laevigata. I read about Cherokee Rose and it states that they dont produce alot of seed. This plant is COVERED in hips and inside are 15-20 seeds. And that it is heavily scented. This one is not. It has a very slight scent. And the leaves are too large. As for R. bracteata- "Although each flower of R. bracteata contain hundreds of stamens, the pollen is only slightly potent. This combined with the fact that the Macartney rose doesnÂt accept foreign pollen readily explain the absence of hips found on the plants. R. bracteata is a diploid with 2 sets of 7 chromosomes (2n=14) or a total of 14 chromosomes." http://www.olyrose.org/Rosebracteata.htm And Rosa multiflora blooms cluster. These do not. The blooms themselfs are about 3 inches across. This rose is very invasive. Its in all in the ditches along the roads here. And it loves! water because we get standing water here and theres always a good 6 inch to a foot of water in the ditches. I just went and cut a piece off so I could get better pics.This in an outer most piece. I wasnt brave enough to stick my arm in the thicket! The thorns in these pics dont do it any justice at all! The main stems are just crowded with massive thorns. Heres the leaves The thorns the buds...they form wrinkled.Almost like they are puckering up. The flowers closed every night. I dont know if they open come morning. But the petals on this one came off in my fingers when I took them away from this pic. The center Now here you can see the size of the buds to the leaves. Large buds compared to the leaves. Hope this helps. I went in search after reading the suggestions but found myself up in arms again! Yeah with the comment about frost I knew where you were going ... my thinking was being "springy" it wouldn't freeze as deep or at all. Being pretty close to Lake Michigan and in the winter we get the perma cloud with the cold air coming across it. Thus plants wouldn't be getting much sun thus not needing much water in the winter if there was such a unicorn to begin with. This area never had any problem before this new drain field. Weird thing is further down hill the soil is drier. The problem I'm having is the lawn mower sinking in this wet area. In the 25 years I've been in my house I've trenched 2 4" pipes down to the lake for my gutters. Then the drain field I'm talking about. Later trenched electricity down to the lake and pressure pipe back towards the house for my lake pump. Then a major landscaping project, then a 4 season porch so I don't know if I can handle tearing up my lawn again. This grassy area is about 24' in diameter and what I might do is plant some shrubs here thus I won't have to mow it. Any suggestion on shrubs (under 5' tall) for this area? Wet, mostly sunny, clay?
