Xanthostemon fruticosus "Red Chief"

Bought this plant the other day, Xanthostemon fruticosus "Red Chief". We have a number of native Xanthostemons here but they're all trees and flowers yellow or greenish yellow. This one is from the northern Philippines and is supposed to grow as a shrub 2 to 3 metres tall with red flowers.

Interesting bit of associated trivia, the nursery I mostly go to got the plant from the Philippines. A nursery owner friend of theirs got some of it off them and tissue cultured it. He also labeled it "Red Chief" and registered it. So now it's protected under plant breeders rights and can't be propagated by anyone else. The things you can do with a cutting.

Inga, I know what you mean. I heard it yelling out to me "Take me home with you!!! I couldn't resist, long time since I've had an offer like that, LOL.

FW, I have been eyeing with similar thoughts in mind. But alas it's still a bit too small for that.

FF, this is parts of the blurb that came with the plant:

"Originally from the Philippines, Red Chief' is a medium to large shrub growing to around 2-3 metres, which is very well adapted to Australian tropical and subtropical conditions.

......Preferring a situation in full sun, regular pruning will ensure an almost continuous display of new flowers throughout the year, as well as attractive glossy new growth."

It's produced by Darwin Plant Wholesalers but they are strictly a wholesale business. But you could try googling their website and emailing them for the names of people they supply near you.

Well good luck with it. The northern beaches would be the closest you'd get to subtropical in Sydney.

I still can't get hold of any. Darwin Nursery won't send me any. I wonder if the Queensland Bunnings with send them to a Sydney Bunnings. I just noticed my standard tree variety is about to flower. Very late in the season isn't it? That's for the update Tropic, at least I've got something to work with now. Do you know how much they were? Were they in 6" or 8"? Many thanks

They were in 200mm pots but can't recall looking at the price. If I'm in there in the next few days I'll try to remember to get the price. I always thought Bunnings would send stuff through to other stores (except bananas, of course).

The local species here start to flower middle of the wet season but don't get into full swing until end of wet season. Haven't looked around to see if any are still going.

Yes, in the NT. Mine has about doubled in size but I haven't planted it out. Haven't worked out a suitable site yet. It seems to grow faster than my Xanthostemon chrysanthus.
