hi Anyone growing these??? Should be in the tropical forums but I can hear crickets chirpping in all of them lol Have searched all the forums and get no hits?? Thanks gary
Hi . Supposedly there was one flowering to the south of me but have been unable to locate it ,none of the Bo gdns have it in their calatalogs . I killed one many years ago and have never seen them again ,anywhere. As to the Rhodoleia they were offering seedlings at a distant nursery and I;ve never seen them at all. Sure caught my eye but I'm probably too old to struggle . Any ideas as to why so rare?? Fantastic looking trees for sure !! gary
From what I've read the Amherstia is difficult to flower and even more difficult to set seed, unless you've got it in its perfect climatic niche.Someone I know here has some. She said they are best if marcotted rather than seed grown. Flowering is far earlier.
I had a talk with the nursery people I mostly deal with. They have an Amherstia in their own garden I'm going to see if I can sweet talk them into giving me some cuttings.
Hi Only place I've even seen them offered was at the really large sales . One gallon pots for 100 bucks lol The one I killed came from there . None of the tropical gardens have them in their catalog even Fairchild. Had always assumed they were high altitude being from Myanmar but I see pix of gorgeous trees in Singapore and you don't get much hotter than that?? lol The Rhodoleia they're offering are from seed they collected in China championii not henryi as I said. 1 quart 80 bucks !! lol Good luck with the cuttings have heard it's very difficult Would be worth a shot?? Don't know if they're the "Worlds most beautiful tree " but they certainly are rare ?? lol gary
As you say worth a try. Marcotting is better, but I don't know if they're going to agree to the cuttings, let alone marcotting. Now is the time of year to do it, our wet season. This morning before sun up it was 28C on my verandah with humidity at 95%. I think the Amherstia would be happy with that.
hi Would think you'd have the ideal location for them,Maybe a bit too dry?? Interesting plant that it is the only one in the genus and incredibly limited natural range , "Adaptable " is never a word you hear associated with them??lol I have a very small area already jammed with too many plants and besides I'm old and grouchy to struggle much lol Good lluck would love hearing about your progress!! gary
