On the bugle!

Very nice looking flower, but the smell is very off putting. Amorphophallus bulbifer, not as bad as some Amorphs, but there are 2 flowering in the garden now, another 2 will open soon, and I can see a few more emerging. Luckily they're well away from the house, but a stroll around the back of the garden isn't so pleasent just now (nor will it be for the next few days). Looks like they're going to have to be relocated further out the back of the block.

(In case anyone thinks I should clarify about the "flower", this is really an inflorescence and as with other aroids the actual flowers are clustered around the central 'column' or spadix.)

As you say, nice looking, but not for the sensitive noses.

That's an interesting one, that Ajuga. I've had it drop dead from 2-4-D, and I've had it stand up to everything short of tactical nukes. I'd try a good 3-way (something like "Weed-B-Gon Max" or one of the Bayer Advanced products. Better luck is obtained by added a couple squirts of dishwashing liquid (avoid the antibacterial ones) to make it stick to the leaves.

About little plants growing right up to the base of my roses, I wouldn't worry about bugleweed's competing with roses for water. My roses are deep rooted, possibly because of minimal watering and deep soil, and even violets don't cause them any problems, and I would guess that violets are a lot more invasive than bugleweed. But I have been wondering about whether herbaceous plants in contact with the canes aren't promoting the cankers that so plague many of my roses. I've become more diligent about keeping the bases of the roses clean since this occurred to me.

And in a couple of days, the tenth anniversary of 9/11. Seeing clips from the event, the whole traumatic aftermath, it brings a big lump to my throat. And tonight after the President spoke, they made a news break that there is probably a terrorist event planned for Washington or New York City....not known yet what or where. It made me feel sick on my stomach. I guess they want us to get the message that any time they wish, they can reach out and get us. But we shall see. This country was not created and defended by wimps and cowards. God bless America.

You wouldn't want a sensitive nose around these. Although, a few other Amorphs have a much stronger smell than A. bulbifer. It's a bit hard to pinpoint what the smell is, but it's not rotting flesh. I had an A. gigas flower recently, and that was more like rotting flesh.
