Orchid.

This is just coming into flower for the first time, I planted it in a rock crevasse so long ago I can't recall, maybe 5 years or so. Back then I wrote on a plastic label, Cymbidium 'cascade'. Not sure if I bought at an orchid show or a neighbour gave it to me.

What a wonderful surprise and such a beautiful Orchid too.
It will look so pretty when it gets older with more stems/sprays hanging down.

Yup, saw pictures online and that`s what it seems to be and what I remember the flowers looked like. Very pretty but some plants in the pics looked rather big, I thought it`s a miniature. Does anybody grow this species and how? Thank you theloyalplum and fuzzballiscute for the help to identify my orchid!

It's an epiphyllum, probably an epiphyllum hybrid (which typically contain other, similar genera, including Disocactus, Pseudorhipsalis and Selenicereus). These are commonly referred to as 'orchid cactus', but they are neither a true cactus nor an orchid :-) They are a semi-tropical succulent related to cactus that produces large, very showy flowers. They do produce an edible fruit (NOT a dragon fruit) but these are scarce on indoor plants. They are epiphytes, meaning they take advantage of other, larger plants - like trees - as a support system, like most tropical orchids do, and do not require soil in their native habitat. For home gardeners, they grow perfectly well in a good quality, fast draining potting mix. Unless you live in a semi-tropical climate or certainly a frost free zone (Z 10 or higher), these are not hardy outdoor. And they are pendant in habit, with those long branching structures cascading over the side of a container to often a significant length. One normally grows them in some sort of hanging basket structure or on a tall plant stand to show off the plant and its long branches to best effect. btw, the flowers form at the tips of these flattened leaves/branches so any pruning should be done cautiously. There are scads of websites on epis and if you do a bit of searching, they will provide all the growing info you need (rather than my repeating it all here!!). I find they are very easy to grow and will reward you with some gorgeous - if short-lived - flowers. I've got one setting flower buds now after being moved back indoors from its summer holiday location. Here's just one example of an epiphyllum website but do not stop with just one!! And be sure to check out any that show photo galleries of the blossoms - they are incredible!!

I cut the plants off the stalks, leaving what they were attached to and just sort of stuck them in little pots with orchid planing soil -which looks like is just bark and vermiculite. They were looking good but last night I think they were discovered by some slugs. I am soaking them and I'll put them back in their pots. Oh, and I fertilized them with some very weak fertilizer. I need to get the little wooden baskets. They're pretty fugly as is, between the chewed up leaves and their temp pots. I'll post pictures when they are looking a little better.

The spotted cat was probably a society raffle plant a few years ago. Bred by Aranbeem orchids in Australia and might be available in the USA because some of the large nurseries swap flasks. Those orchid purples still are a problem even with modern cameras. Thank you for all the comments. The two Cymbidiums give a lie about all the cooling down stuff. Certainly does apply to many Cymbidiums here in Cymbidium heaven but there are always exceptions.

Thank you ladies, I checked the label again today - I always try to tag my plantings. This I've marked planted August 2008, Cymbidium 'red cascade'. And hello mistymorn, been a long time between postings. And inga, the tv news is giving the impression the winter up north is going to be rather severe. Glad I'm not in N. Y. state.

Buffalo.NY. USA. had over 2 meters of snow.
Now it's getting warm and the melt will produce flooding.

Very nice Bill, a very pretty flower we love it!!
Had a little rain last week and I can hear some solid thundery drops on the roof,we might get lucky today(Monday)

t's nice to get a surprise like that. It's a nice flower. With a bit of TLC you could get flowering each year, My little Nervilia orchids respond with annual flowerng with just the odd bit of fertiliser when I get around to it.

Very nice flower Bill. Out of curiosity what do u use to mark ur labels? I found an old brom i got 5 yrs ago written in pencil and was clear as day but permanent marker only lasts a couple of yrs for me. What do u all use?

I use to make labels from thin copper sheeting cut into shape and stamped, but for a garden over a acre I got a bit tired of that. I now use white plastic labels, which I sandpaper to roughen the surface and write on in pencil - pencil is resistant to rain and time. Problem is the magpies sometimes pinch them or they get buried under mulch or expanding plant growth smothers them. I also keep an 'Exel' computer list but I'm getting a bit lax now on keeping that up to date too. I should be more vigilant.

I've set up html files for plants so I can include photos without the files getting too big. Trouble is, do you spend your time gardening, or writing it up? Which reminds me, there's a few things I should be out doing right now!

Thanks Bill. That sandpaper idea is great! Do you fertilise your orchids when they come into flower with Potassium or anything?
Tropicbreezant, id prefer to be in the garden haha, im hopeless on computers.

Very rarely, they all grow in rock niches in a stone wall bordering the rear boundary; I started them off on sphagnum moss. Took them awhile to really get going but they've all survived despite the fact that 18 months ago I cut away a lot of their shade from the afternoon sun. Rarely I'll pour a watering can of diluted Seasol over them, they don't seem to mind that.
