'O. Dancing Lady'

I just noticed today this orchid open its first flower - I've had it on the rock for nigh on 6 years and this is its first showing. My label says it's an Ocidium, variety 'Dancing Lady' but as I've no memory of where I got it from, perhaps a long departed neighbour, I can't be sure. Tedhort, I understand you've dabbled in Orchids, maybe you might know?

Some flowers just come out wrong. Mericloned plants (especially when this is done too many times) are prone to this because the DNA is a little less stable with little pieces broken off the edges. If a small additional piece of DNA drops off when the flower bud cells are splitting (you'd be surprised how often this happens, in fact this is why our bodies age), you just may get missing petals, lips, etc. Additionally, I've heard of mutations happening due to overuse of vitamins and hormones. These oncidiums tend to climb. I finally beat them at there game by mounting them on pieces of bark with sphaghnum moss around their roots. In a pot, I would allow enough room in front for (2 years growth) 2 bulbs width. The back bulbs may be buried a little, or just lean all the bulbs forward flush with the level of the edges of the pot and re-pot them in this position.

We also have had a strange winter. Lots of lower- low temps into April and tons of rain this past year. Some of my bulbs have rotted from standing in water for days sometimes. The Globulifera is pretty (had to look that one up). These two just spread by corms- kinda slowly. I also have the regular pink winitii and the White Dragon. The white one hasn't came up yet this year so I guess I should probably dig it up and see if its still okay lol. One of the nurseries near here has the yellow globbas.

Oh Goodie! I found one :) It was 4 dollars and something...in a gallon pot. Thanks for the heads up. It's so pretty! Happy Dance~~ Question: There are two separate flowers on the plant. One is hot pink and the flower on the other side is very light pink. Do they fade to lighter color as they age? Or start out light and turn dark? ~Lenette

Ok Inga, I'll do that but I might just wait another couple of days as more along that stem are opening up. As of now, 24 hours later, another 2 have opened. Mind you, a closer pic of the centre of the flower will cut off those long spidery arms.

Yes, of course I understand that it would cut of the "arms", but it will be nice to see the blossoms detail. Thanks.

Ok, I took another couple of pics this morning. I also did a bit more research on it and now believe it be a 'spider' orchid of the genus Brassia, possibly b. verrucosa. Cant swear to that though, will endeavour to get it confirmed. I'll try and include the other pic I took this morning.

Thanks Benno, definitely a Brassia I reckon and probably verrucosa is the variety.
