Hello, The best starting out advice I can give you is to get a copy of Botanica's "Pocket Orchids" it is great and inexpensive, comprehensive and easy to read and it will allow you to choose which orchids to grow in your area. Written for Aussie orchid growers it has hundreds maybe thousands of colour photos. Then, get hold of your local orchid society and give them a call. You will be amazed how much help they will be willing to give you and how generous they can be. That is how I started out, orchid growers tend to be very passionate about their particular, preferred plants and will often give you divisions, seedlings or keikis to help you get into the hobby. But beware the dark side, this is a hobby that can suck you in and become an all consuming passion!;) Good luck, BC |

| >does anyone have any advice/seeds/plants Look for advice and plants but I'd suggest avoiding seed. Orchid seeds lack endosperm (the inbuilt energy reserves that help seeds germinate) and as such almost all orchids rely on nutrients supplied by fungi to germinate. Most orchid seed raising is carried out in vitro using nutrient agar to simulate fungi derived nutrients. You can germinate orchids in pots in the presence of the appropriate fungi (low yield) but this generally requires that you already have another orchid carrying the correct fungi. Either way orchid seed germination and raising is usually beyond the resources and abilities of someone just starting out. Most of the popular genera also take several years to flower so you'll be waiting a long time before you see a reward for your effort. |

Good Day Bella.. See if you can fined a Orchid club in your area, some times you can fined somebody selling plants in stalls or at garage sales, that person will help you with all the info you wont and even give you some cutings or (pups) as thay call them. This is how i got started, and ones you get started you will be hooked. Hope you can fined some... Dave... |
