WANTED: Iris species - evansia
| | |
Posted by LianeH WA Aust (My Page) on Thu, Oct 13, 05 at 2:31
| Hi,
Just spotted some species Iris at an iris show up at the local shopping centre - and I was hoping somebody out there might have or know where to obtain Evansia.
Am happy to pay a reasonable amount - as I don't have a lot to swap (belamcanda [leopard lily], lots of agapanthus, some succulents (including zygos and rhipsalis))
Thanks
Liane

Evansias are a group rather than a species. If you can determine whether you can receive Iris tectorum (blue) seed in WA I will be happy to send you some for the cost of postage. Check it out on Google. Other evansias include Iris japonica, with a number of named selected varieties, and a variegated form, Iris tectorum alba (white), Iris wattii, Iris confusa, Iris cristata, Iris gracilipes. All very dainty woodland species. I. tectorum is the only one that prefers full sun and a little lime, like the beardeds. Cheers, Jan |

| Hi Jan I was at an iris exhibition - and they just said that they were evansia- they didn't need boggy ground however -she said they grew in full sun (does that help with the identification ? It was a fairly petite flower, slightly fringed look kind of pale blueish) OK - found a picture on thompsons - that looks a lot like the ones they had at the show (its the variagated foliage one - ones I saw didn't have variagated foliage) http://plants.thompson-morgan.com/uk/en/product/7942/1?RA=tiscali tectorum - roof iris (is that correct ?) WAQIS lists that one as OK. Thanks again Liane |

Evansia is just a class of iris. You would still need to know the specific name, which will be Iris ......(something), and most likely one of the ones I have mentioned. There is no Iris evansia, or any single type of iris called evansia. Iris tectorum is one of the most common ones and is in bloom here at present. It is easy to grow, and as you say, doesn't like wet soil. It likes full sun but will grow in light shade, and likes to be dug up and transpanted every 2 years or so, or it depletes the soil nutrients, and stops blooming. Grows easily from seed too. Cheers, Jan |

| I'd like to try the tectorum if you can spare some seeds (let me know where to send the SASE to. Feel free to email me off list. It was suggested by the local garden centre that it might be japonica - as that should be flowering now, tectorum apparently doesn't flower for a bit later. Either way - I like the look of the tectorum, so thanks heaps. Thankfully I like trying things from seed :) I can usually get them germinating, however survival to adult hood is another matter! Thanks again Liane |
