It is perfectly legitimate to head a CL in the dormant, but better in the summer. In French Axe it is better to bend it over or to head the CL to a side growing branch that is vertically oriented and it will then become a weaker growing CL. I can think of two Golden Delicious orchards near me: A) very beautiful trees CL that are absolutely identical to each other. Planted close and not too tall. A "model orchard" that is exhibited to growers from other countries. B) big old trees in the "old" open vase style. Only 108 trees per acre. B outproduces A by 25%. It is far more profitable, but you probably wouldn't start an orchard like this today as time is money and it is slow to come into production. But A took a lot of money to get those trees to look uniform. Lots of training and cutting and that delayed production. More expense for posts and wire. We need to remember that we want fruit and not wood. There is a "happy medium" and it depends on where you are, what you want, what you are growing, etc. I would dismiss hard and fast rules.

I had fruits in the frist year of planting.but I'll only take if the cutting is from 500mm over P.S growing Dragon Fruit you should keep it climb to max Height of 1.5 meter only. don't let it over grow. if it over grow they don't fruit as much

I mistyped. The general consensus was the tree in the above photo was a peach, not an apricot. And after looking up pictures of immature peach fruits it looks like they were right. Theres another tree fused at the bottom of it that some people thought was apricot. Here are leaves of that tree (no fruit yet) I also forgot to put my zone. its 7b/6a the online runs through my county. Where Arkansas Missouri and Oklahoma meet Is the cold why apricots rarely fruit in your area Ken? Why do you think the peach did fruit last year but did this year if it wasnt pruning away dead growth Ken? Even in fruit trees that alternate heavy and light fruiting years they fruit some in the off years dont they?

Java Plum can grow in Southern California or Florida in climate zone 10 (near the coast). I'm not sure about colder than that. Java plum is "an acquired taste", as they say. Many people who grew up with them love them, but the flavor can be very astringent. They are an invasive plant in the tropics, with the birds spreading the seeds everywhere, but this is probably not going to be a problem in the dry climate of Southern California. It is listed as an invasive plant in several counties in Southern Florida though. They are beautiful trees and can get to be very tall, but they are very messy, dropping their fruit everywhere.
