WANTED: Collector's forum/exchange

Hello all,
I have just e-mailed gardenweb moderators or organisers or what do you call them? To request the addition of a collector's forum/exchange.
I know there are plenty of you who would also like to see this type of forum added so would you please take the time to e-mail gardenweb and show your support. I was directed to the suggestions forum at http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/suggest/.
Please show your support for this forum here also, but as it seems to be a forum for all gardenweb users worldwide you will need to stipulate that we want a GWA collector's forum/exchange. The only thing worse than not having a collector's forum/exchange would be for one to start up on the U.S. site so we could all drool over plants we can't import into Aus.
Thanks,
Brendon

If you consider the number of different species that people might be interested in collecting, I think one forum could hardly cover it. From what I have seen on this exchange, there are a few collectors who only ever advertise what THEY want, and don't offer what they have. I have tried to find people here who collect different types of irises, but none are into it in as big a way as I am. You may find fellow collectors to exchange with, depending on your interests, but personally I don't think they are here on GW. |

Hello, Thanks for your replies. I have addressed Peter's questions by e-mail before I realized that this forum is the better place to do so. Forgive me, I will answer further posts here. Sparaxis, I beg to differ. I know of at least eleven members who are often on the GW who share my particular collecting interests. I'm sure there are heaps of collectors with other interests out there who would benefit from a forum of this type. Even if they are not, currently on the GW I suspect that the facility to communicate with other collectors who share their passion would induce them to join. New members, new stock to trade, new information and points of view. Can't lose. Regards, Brendon |

| Playing devil's advocate here (as someone who has benefited from the generosity of GW members, including your good self): (1) How would this satisfy a need that the current forums don't? Eg If I had a query about a particular orchid, I could post it to the general Gardening in Oz forum; if I wanted to trade that species, I could post it to the Australian Garden Exchange Forum. Presumably other people interested in this particular species would respond in either case; those not interested wouldn't. (2) How do you define a 'collector' or a 'collector's plant'? And how will people know if their query belongs in that forum? People from cooler climes might consider many of our common tropical plants as collector items, and vice versa for those in the sub/tropics re cool-climate plants. Perhaps you could give an example showing how such a forum would suit a need not being met by the current arrangement? |

| As it does seem that GW Australia needs to interest as many people as possible in order to survive I think that a collectors forum is a great idea. I know I really appreciate being able to read the US specialist forums ie hoyas, bananas etc. but to be able to communicate with Australian growers of these items and share our experiences would add another dimension to gwa and hopefully get more participation in the forums.
