WANTED: Yellow African Tulip (Spathodea campanulata)

Hi, I have recently returned from a trip to Townsville were I saw 3 yellow flowered Spathodea campanulata growing on the Strand. I saw no seed pods on or under the trees, so might they be sterile? If so I would like to find out who has them so I can buy one, but all the nurseries I've spoken to aren't aware of the yellow flowered form. The orange one is invasive and so I probably shouldn't grow that. Does anyone know of the Townsville yellow's origins, or of anyone who sells them?

Regards, Scott

Hi Scott,

I live in Townsville, which part off the strand were the trees, so I can go check out and keep an eye on the tree for seed pots for you.

Cheers Annette

Hi Annette, I can't tell you exactly which part, but they were quite obvious driving along the road with their bright golden flowers. It was near the entrance to the waterpark I think, about half way along the Strand. I've found out that the cultivar is called "Aurea", but still don't know who sells it. They are apparently easy to propagate with semi hard wood and root cuttings.

Thanks for looking, and I'd be interested to hear if they develop any seed pods.

Cheers, Scott

Hi Scott,

I found them. It is illegal to sell this tree in either the yellow or red form. I will keep an eye out for seeds.

Cheers Annette

If it's as bad as the orange, pls think carefully before you plant it.
We planted our orange one about 28 years ago when we first moved onto our suburban block, well before it was declared a pest.
Then about 3-4 years ago, we decided it had to go.
what a nightmare! we had it ground down below soil level but it still keeps shooting...not only around where the base of the tree was but along the root line as well.
I'm hesitant to use root killer because it is in the middle of the garden.

Can anybody please help me locate seeds or the red/orange 'normal' one please? They are not a weed where I live.
Thanks

I have the orange tree growing and can keep an eye out for seed, or if allowable, send you a young sucker of it.
