Sprouting sweet potato

I planted out my first sweet potatoes about 6 weeks ago, and a second batch a few weeks later. Both were v. slow to germinate. Anyway, while I've been watching with anticipation the veggie-patch tubers, this little bulb (bought for consumption and sitting in my kitchen for a couple of weeks) came to life!

Here is a link that might be useful: Sprouting sweet potato

When they want to grow, there's no stopping them!

I have mine planted in amongst the silver beet and they are sprawling around. Is it correct that they put down roots from the vines and the new fruits grow there??

Sweet potato will send down roots wherever a node is in contact with the ground. Some say you should periodically lift them to prevent this. I think the reasoning is that it's better to have the plant concentrate on forming tubers at one spot only. I never bothered and certainly got enough to keep me in sweet potato.
