Reading the subject re: snail pellets and beer traps I have a problem. Here in Albany WA I have a grey snail that I cannot kill. They don't hide. In fact they sit on the plants in full sun, sipping cocktails and wearing sunnies. They don't leave the plants and the beer traps are never visited. They don't seem to be affected by coffee spray or even coffee grounds sprinkled on them and their leaf habitat. I have even placed snail pellets in the Arum Lilly and Canna Lily leaves where the love to hang out, with no effect. So, they don't boose, they don't eat pellets and they don't space out on caffene. They just eat my plants. Any suggestions folks?

pick them off by hand and throw them in a bucket of salty water, easy peasy if you dont have to hunt around for them

Do you have access to an elephant gun? If so, go to the nearest elephant and threaten it with the elephant gun. Demand it go to your garden and hoover up all the snails or else...

We saw those little grey beasts when we were visiting WA - I thought they were flowers until I got up close - there were rows of them on the grass along the beach front at Bussleton I think it was. I thought they were some sort of native snail because I've never seen such little ones. Attilla the Tasmanian Marauder is still lurking in my yard avoiding the electric snail fence and playing leapfrog with the possums. He is one big daddy judging from the meaty looking progeny which are so plentiful that I am thinking of Escargot as we speak. Console yourself with one of those fantastic Margaret River Reds - you are not alone . There is a potential market out there for the brave at heart. Cheers Linda

Funny!!!. When I find them eating my plants the easiest and most satisfying result is the "crunch" underfoot. Very final:) Have to be careful with slugs though, After gooshing a few extra large ones you can go skiing. They just don't have that anti-skid gritty shell that snails have. Is that what evolutionists call natural selection ?:)

There is a spray for snail control so there are no pellets to avoid.

I don't use baits in my garden but have found that my turtles love to eat garden snails.I pick them off the plants and put them in the turtle enclosure.I just wish the turtles would push the empty shells out of their pond once a week. I was quite disappointed when snails got to my amaryllis flowers this year. The turtles, however ,weren't disappointed with the snail offerings. |

How do you reckon goldfish would go - my daughter has got her dream - a property on which to create her 24 hour child care centre. I've just inherited a crass looking set of tumbling ponds in lovely plastic complete with 14 goldfish! Oh, and 5 acres to do with what I wish so long as the kids get 'gardening with grandma' once a week! Just when you think its safe to get back into your own pond! Cosmic - I did see it coming - honestly! L |

How about Beagles? A nice organic feed of goldfish with snails on the side might be just the ticket to slow him down............L

Yes!!!, I agree with all of you, Turtles would love the goldfish and snails. Full dinner size plate turtles would probably enjoy the beagle as well. Yes we are a wise bunch:)
