Hughes/Basinga Green has finally arrived

Hello to everyone on the forum. Sorry I have not posted for some time. Now that I have more time this should be a more regular thing. Three years ago I found a yellow when ripe tomato in a row of 1884 plants. I could not decide if it was Hughes or Basinga-although I lean more towards Basinga. For several seasons the saved seed demonstrated stable characteristics. However, last season one plant provided green when ripe fruit. The plant was identical to the other Hughes/Basinga plants. Always on the look out for green mutations/crosses? the seed was saved to grow this year. Well all three plants are identical in morphology and one of them has given a green when ripe tomato. What is provided below is an example. I gave Grub some of the same seed so it will be interesting to see Grub gets too. Cheers Craig

Nice one Craig. So now we have one NSW and one Vic green-when-ripe tommy. I think these both would have to be classified as Australian varieties so as soon as you're happy with it, I'd love some seeds (and a name) to add to the Aussie tomato collection. Ray

No worries Ray. As soon as the other two plants produced the same green when ripe fruit I will start distributing the seed. Also have several promising lines of Lucky Cross Pink in different leaf forms and fruit colour that are hopefully stabilised. Cheers Craig

Hi Craig, Glad to see you're posting. I have one of your Hughs/Basinga Greens in and it's RL, about 3ft, with some emerging flower trusses. It's in a pretty good spot and will no doubt set fruit in weeks to come. I will report back with news as it breaks. Looks like an interesting one, for sure. Yum. I also have a pile of my Mystery Greens and one Green Giant. I don't want to push my own barrow, but I must say the Mystery, especially in RL, is mighty productive and hardy. The PLs haven't the same number of flowers per truss, but they are a nice manageable plant. Best wishes to you for 2006, Grub

Hello Grub. Your Mystery Green plants are all potato leaf, and while they were planted later, are starting to set fruit now. Your Mystery Green is doing better than Green Giant, but both are good solid plants and will do well. Piccies later of both. Also best wishes to you in 2006 and lots of Green Grubs-err..., Mystery Greens! Craig
