| Well I still don't know why or what happened but I finally pulled all the plants yesterday and threw them away. Sooooooooo disappointed, even more so I guess because I just don't know WHY. Plants green and healthy, roots healthy as well but you would really have thought that they were bonsai specimens - miniature tomato plants. They just didn't grow any bigger than about 15-20 cm, nor did the roots expand. The ones left in pots were exactly the same as those I transplanted into the ground.
So is it too late to plant seedlings if I bought some from wherever? Too late in Melbourne I presume to plant seed and try again? I do have a couple of seedlings coming up of their own accord, probably from the compost I guess. Maybe I could just offer to swap chillies, garlic & herbs for toms? LOL. "Tomatoes Lost" - my new novel I think. |

| Not to late for seedlings. Not sure why your toms didn't grow. Was the ground constantly wet. With the weather we have been having its a chance. Waterlogged plants will not grow. If you have some larger pots, say 30 litres, fill them with good potting mix and chuck in some bought seedlings. The pots will heat up quickly and you plants should get away really well. |

| As Oz says, waterlogged plants spin out and rot and die. They often stunt too. My dad grew tommies in Fern Tree Gully for thirty years. He always put another lot in each month until christmas. They grew fine. I reckon you could get some bought seedlings, and throw a few seeds in punnets as well. From memory, it doesn't really get cold in Melbourne until at least mid april? |
