Not a tropical veggie gardener but just thought I'd wish you luck, though things seem to grow without much fuss in the tropics. And all those delicious tropical fruits, fantastic.

Anything over winter/autum will grow as most of coastal QLD and the north is frost free.. Over summer eggplant and chillis (treat as perrenials, watermellon, pumpkins, cherry tomatoes (fruit fly will smash large tomatoes over summer) herbs etc. best bet is to give it a try and see how you go. Good luck

Check out this site from the DPI. It shows what to sow and when it is best time for vegies. Also a lot of useful hints on the rest of the site.

Here is a link that might be useful: Sowing guide

RE: Tropical veggies

Hi I lived in Townsville for six years and forget about growing anything if you are around that area in the Summer as its too hot, so is a lot of the Autumn and Spring. Even the pineapples got burnt on the side facing the sun one year, then there is the rain, the Cyclones the fruit fly the caterpillars and all kinds of bugs No Snails or Slugs ...... Best to ask the locals see if they are growing anything, also forget about growing anything from seed till the weather is really cool they wont germinate and when they do they bolt to seed. Now having said that you can grow the best mango's, lychee's , bananas, Paw-Paw, custard apple . watermelons, pineapples so many fruits trees so grow what you want. In the very late Autumn I grew ( corn and zucchini from seeds ) capsicum and tomatoes, ( All got fruit fly ) spring onions, potatoes I even managed one hard hearted lettuce and broccoli but the caterpillars managed to go though them all, and don't forget the snake beans as the normal green beans I tried to grow got decapitated at soil level I forget the name of the disease so I never got to eat the fruits of my labours. So don't take any notice of what you read in books you must ask the locals, they will tell you what and when to plant that is if you can find anyone that does grow veggies. So have a go at any seedlings you can buy and the Best of Luck to you.......Cheers..MM.
