cashews

Hi y'all

does anyone have experience with growing cashews?

I've just received some seeds and my thumbs are so green at the moment that I expect all five to grow ;-)

some of the questions I have are

how vicious is the oil on the actual nut - it can cause severe dermatitus on some people

do the dreaded fruit fly attack the cashew apple (just as tasty as the nut in my opinion)

does it need shade or shelter in the first few years?

thanks

RE: cashews

I grew a small plant up in Townsville is was not big enough to call it a tree I grew it in full sun.
And I even got one nut in the second year, but it was a troublesome tree to grow.
Cashews are a Tropical tree and will not tolerate FROSTS or temps below 7 degs.
In Australia there are only two plantations of Cashews one in Darwin and the other in North Queensland.
All your Questions are answered on the link below.....Cheers..MM.

RE: cashews

Hmmm, reminds me of my childhood. By far the best thing about the cashew is not the nut but the delicious delicate fruit that grows behind it.

We grew them easily in a semi arid area near Rockhampton QLD. Not so the case as I reside in Canberra now!

Cheers
Karl
