 o
Desert Raisin (Solanum centrale)

Posted by Spatzbear SA Aust (My Page) on

I succeded in germinating one seed of a Desert Raisin. I am now wondering when to repot the thing. It's got tons of shoots from that one seed. Should I leave the whole clump as is? Or try and divide it? Will normal potting mix do? Any suggestions more than welcome. Thanks. :)

Maybe a 'seed' is a clump of seeds, like beetroot. I have no experience but, if you could very carefully have a look at the base/roots, you should be able to tell if it's a single plant or several. But since it's the only one I'd be tempted to leave it alone and just pot it on or plant it into the garden. Would love to see pics as it develops.

Did you sow one seed or one fruit/berry??? Solanum seeds don't usually make multiple stems (and when they do, it often is bad news for the offsprings...). Anyway, I wouldn't disturb the plant(s) at this stage but would thin some plantlets when they are at the 2 leaf-stage (cutting the stems with scissors) and then pot it on before planting it.

Rose-Marie, I sowed 3 berries. They each had 1 big seed (as far as I can remember). I soaked the berries, and pulled back the flesh from the seed a little bit, so that's why I know it's 1 big seed.

Thanks to you and Ray for the advice. I'll leave them as they are for the time being. :)

I bet you know this by now but, so that others will know Solanum centrale has anywhere from 15 to 20+ seeds. That "1 big seed" was an entire bush tomato!

Did you soak the Desert Raisin first in water or anything such as smoke granules ect?
How are the plants now, did they reach maturity?
I have 2 of my first very small Desert Raisin seedlings so it would be great to hear about your experience.
