Aphids in a greenhouse

| Hi all,
Any tried and tested methods to deter aphids in greenhouse solanaceae crops? My eggplants especially, but to a lesser extent my capsicums, chillies and tomatoes are getting caned already. I find I have to spray white oil or pyrethrum every fortnight to stay on top of them.
How effective are some of the biocontrol methods available? I would rather put out lacewing eggs and/or ladybirds than spray.
Cheers,
Manuel.

| Can't help Manuel. I had aphids in mine as well. I moved the affected plants out. No more aphids. Don't see any reason why lacewing/ladybird intro won't work. Probably take a while though and once they're introduced, you can't spray again, not without killing them that is. |

The aphids seem to be flying in from outside. All the time I keep finding full-grown winged aphids on the plants where I know for sure they weren't there the day before. Either that or the ants are bringing them in. There is a close relationship between the two, but I'm not sure whether ants farm the aphids or just turn up to the new foodsource when the aphids proliferate. Last year at the end of the season (feb-mar) a high proportion of the aphids were parasitised by little wasps, but there is no sign of them yet this year. If I could encourage the wasps they might keep the aphids under control. Cheers! Manuel |
