identifying a native fruit

I just discovered that a tree on my property (that I was thinking of chopping out) is putting out fruit. I think it is a native. The fruit are deep red and glossy, and a bit smaller than a cherry. They are smooth and nearly spherical, but are not as high as the cross diameter (ie like a mandarin).

Does anyone have any idea what it is? I will try to get a photo taken to post if I don't have any luck.

the tree is short - nearly as tall as me.

A neighbour has identified it as native plum. I had a search for that on google and couldn't find anything similar.

I don't think it's a native. Compare fruit and leaves with the plant in the link below.

Thanks. That looks like it.

I just planted some other 'brazil cherrys' which are similar but have vertical ribs on the fruit and a sour taste.
