| I've had some globe artichokes at the back of my garden for about 18 months - and I still haven't had a flower out of them.
are there any special tricks to getting them flower or is the queensland weather too hot for them? |

I grow mine in the worst soil in the garden mainly as a windbreak - I give them nothing but neglect. Those that I picked the other day were grown from seed and 12 of them planted out in April. The rest went to friends. I was surprised that they actually flowered the first season, albeit a bit late. I picked 4 off two plants and there are about 4 left on each, plus the others are all flowering, about 6 to a plant. We have had a cold spring with a lot of rain, so I suspect that has helped with nice big heads. If you are feeding them too well or they are getting too much sun, it might be a problem. They are a thistle after all so shouldn't be nurtured! Mine are against a west facing fence so they get only early morning sun for a little while then shade the rest of the day. They transplant fairly well if you cut the leaves back, so might pay you to move them to a shady place. Linda |
