strawberries ripen off plant?

Silly question really, but i'm sick of losing my strawberries to the snails. Yesterday morning in the pouring rain on my way to feed the chooks, I noticed all these beautiful strawberries, and I reminded myself to come and get them when the weather lightenend up a bit. But lo and behold in the afternoon the snails had taken chunks out of all of them, dirty rotten scoundrels. So my question is can strawberries if picked before fully red ripen indoors? Thanks in advance

Strawberries don't ripen further once picked in terms of increasing sugars and overall flavour. Try putting a paper bag around a cluster of fruit to keep the snails away, or spray with diluted espresso coffee or sprinkle coffee grounds liberally around them. Or a bowl of beer or yeast dissolved in water, even some vegemite in water. If it's close to the fruit the snails may get attracted to that, fall in and drown. |

| Birds do a lot of damage, too. They take out big chunks, and then the snails/slugs and millipedes move in. If birds are a problem, net the strawberries. Ray's suggestions are all very good. |
