| Our beloved Spoodle pulled all but one branch off our 2-3 year old mandarine. I tidied up the tears and am a bit nervous about shortening the one remaining branch, which is full of leaves and top heavy. The stubs of the damaged branches look dead. They are situated about 4 inches above the graft. I would like to prune the remaining branch in order to encourage growth lower down but am worried about totally denuding and possibly killing the tree. Has anyone any idea whether the tree would survive such drastic pruning? |

| Mandarine should survive, don't know about the spoodle though:). Try gently scratching the surface of the stubs to see if the wood is still alive. If it is leave it. If the end of the stub is split try to make a clean cut (doesn't give you much to play with). If stub is dead cut it off. Try and tie the remaining branch so that it becomes the main trunk of the tree and if there is no split timber on it leave it as is. If the main branch is also split you may be able to repair it by wrapping the wound in grafting tape (teflon tape works too). |

| Thanks for the info. I'll check out the stubs tomorrow. Spoodle has been threatened with extinction on a number of occasions and I think he is beginning to get the message as he looked pretty guilty when caught with a mouthful of maidenhair recently. |
