Advice on what tom to grow.

Now before you all get too excited, I will confess that I am not an avid grower like some, but I do generally grow a couple of plants every season. Usually I just buy a couple of ready to go types.
I would love to know what varities people would recommend for an
all purpose i.e. for salads and sandwiches or grilling,
medium sized,
easy to purchase tomato.
I obviously have left my run a bit late this year, so I wouldn't be growing form seed.
Any ideas,

Nothing wrong with Grosse Lisse as a dependable red, and prehaps a Roma or a cherry type for salads. Mantis |

I'd say Mantis is bang on - Grosse Lisse is a very decent tomato and Roma is a dependable producer. By the way, Kmart is doing punnets of mixed tomatoes from Diggers Seeds this year. If you were feeling adventurous, you could get yourself a punnet. |

Anyone know much about oxblood please? Also, I have sprayed my others with folimat, put out my fruit fly traps but am still getting little bugs over them and grubs inside some. I have trimmed some of the dead leaves off and tied the stalks securely. and some of the tomatoes seem to have a greemish blotch. I was expecting a bumper crop of rich red tomatoes. The cherry types are doing okay. Could it be our dry climate. I live in CQ in coastal area thanks Jan Jan |

| I don't know Oxblood. It could be a variant of a variety called Oxheart, a longtime favourite wth many backyard gardeners. Dry climates shouldn't bother tommies as long as they get their water to drink. Without knowing more, the greenish blotches, if on ripening tomatoes, could be just non-uniform ripening. A number of old varieties of tommies don't ripen evenly. |
