Hi

We have just moved to a new hosue & outside the window is a beautiful weeping apple tree.

Any ideas on how to care for it please? Does it need mulching & when will it fruit. There are a few fruit from last year on the tree & they look to be regular size apples not crab apples.

Thankyou so much

Christine

I may be able to solve your dilemma Christine! I have a full size weeping apple that has similar fruit to a Jonathon. It is hard to find but commercially available. The cultivar is called "wandin pride". Dont prune at all if its a nice shape. If any shoots are going upwards or spoiling the look of the tree, prune hard to an UPWARD FACING BUD (important!!). Take all the usual apple pest precautions (codlin moth etc) and you will be rewarded with dozens of yummy desert apples in summer. Hope this helps! Justine

Hi Christine
I saw one of these at a nursery last week. It was called a Patio Apple and had a weeping habit. Quite an expensive plant too.

Christine, so sorry for the lateness of this reply but my computer has been in 'hospital'.
Firstly prune your tree in Late winter - this is important - cut to an UPWARD AND OUTWARD facing bud. Prune last years growth by about half. If it hasnt been pruned for years it will need a hard prune- this will affect fruiting for a while.
The key to preventing apple diseases is cleanliness - always remove and destroy damaged or blemished fruit, disinfect your secateurs, regularly sweep up fallen leaves etc. Coddling moth is my biggest pest, and the commercial remedies are very harsh chemicals.
I use the corrugated cardboard method in early spring. Simply wrap around the base of the trunk - replace and burn the cardboard weekly. Coddling moth pupate in the soil then climb the tree to get into your fruit, instead they make a house in the cardboard and all you have to do is destroy.
Mildews are caused by damp, humid/shady conditions. If you have a mildew problem (white/grey powder on the leaves) spray with a solution of 2tsp bicarb soda to 1litre water. Prune to let more sun into the tree.
I think Ive rattled on enough now, there are more pests that plague apple trees but if you keep your tree well watered and fertilized it will resist most pests. Hope Ive been of some help!
