Biodiesel and other energy stuff

I know this is way off topic but we don't have a forum for such things.
Anyway, I just want to have a whinge about our government's unwillingness to embrace alternative energy sources.
Biodiesel is a great example. Before it's even widely available, Johnny has announced his government's excise and licensing policies. It's quite clear that he intends for the oil companies to take full control of biodiesel production.
This really gets my goat. Here we have a chance to develop a fuel that a) can be grown and b) can be produced on a local basis, in your backyard in fact.
But instead of opting for policies that would see Australia's dependence on petroleum based fuels dwindle to negligble levels and that would allow anyone to produce their own, Johnny has given it all to the oil companies. Biodiesel costs about 40 cents per litre to make. Okay, there are issues about by-products but they could easily be solved. Grrrrrr.............!

Cant agree more Ray. Little Johnny is a coniving little weasel. Even if you do make your own biodiesel he will find a way to tax it. The oil companies can see the writing on the wall, and they will be doing a lot of dirty business to keep their hold on the energy stakes.
Just on another note, down here in Vic they have come to an agreement with the farmers, that allows them to have a percentage of GM canola in their harvest. I wonder how long it will be before a farmer gets sued for using some seed companies GM technology, after they save seed and sow it the next year. It happened to a Canadian farmer a couple of years ago.

That surprises me about the Vic farmers. I would have thought that GM free status was a major marketing point for Australian produce. Apparently not.
I suspect Syngenta, Bayer, Monsanto et al will ensure GM crops no matter what, even if it means illegal sowings. After all, once they're out, there you can't take them back!

GM free is a marketing point Ray, but some farmers are getting pollen drift from GM crops and this is supposed to calm these guys. If I were one of them I would be buying new seed for next year eh.

it's all about power and money raymondo, and as for the gmo issue that is a whole 'nutha story out of the same book of greed and deception, you just can't believe anything they tell you and only 10% of what you see they're real magicians.

maybe you should move this over to the discussion forum? for me i reckon it's fare game as it affets us gardener types as well but by the rules it probably won't be accepted here.
