Seeds from Overseas to Australia?

Posted by Shepparton Centr Vic Austr (My Page) on

Hello everyone,

Anyone know if there are restrictions to buying seeds for home gardens from overseas?

I was looking at some japanese vegies - eggplant, squash, shungiku - mainly from US suppliers.

Is it legal to do this?

Check the AQIS page.

Hi Shepparton

When you do order your seeds make sure the seed company puts the scientific name of the seed on you invoice or aqis will confiscate the seed. A short while ago you could import the seed and tell them the scientific name, now they will only accept the seed company say so...

Enjoy the seed catalogs and catch the addiction

Great advice thanks I'll do that!

Ditto what Helen said. They're getting quite picky these days. I ask seed companies to ensure that the scientific name is on each seed packet (many don't print it on but they will write it on if asked) and on the customs sticker.
Be wary too of seed companies adding a few freebies. They could inadvertently send something that is restricted.
Hope this helps.
