Has anyone had success with growing grape vines ?

I would like to grow 6 Chiraz vines and make some wine with the fruit. Anyone had experience doing that ? Would love to hear some stories about making wine from produce from your garden.

Thanks guys
Popi

Hi Popi
I've just planted a few grape vines and my dad has a couple of rows of Shiraz. We barely get enough fruit (after the birds take their share) to eat so I can't help much with the wine aspect. Generally grapes are pretty easy to grow. They require a trellis for support and fruiting normally takes 3 yrs regardless of how old the plant is. ie it needs to be in position for 3 yrs to get a decent crop. There may be a requirement to spray them depending on the pests in your area. If you do a search on the net there are volumes of info to be found. There are even some research papers from Aussie universities, which have some local relevance.

Thanks young pepino for your invaluable information about wine grapes. I have been doing a bit of research, and there are a few pests and diseases. That is interesting, your comment about the vines being in situ for 3 years to get a decent crop. I thought I could get a 3 y.o vine and get fruit by January !! Silly me !

I will plough on with my wine research, I have some land spare, and would love to have a go at growing the grapes.

What type of vines did you just plant ?

Thanks for your help
Popi
