Cacao (Theobroma cacao)

Wondering if anyone is growing a Cacao tree, which is mainly tropical or sub-tropical so I've read... I'm wondering if it might be possible to grow one here in Adelaide, since I don't have frost. It would be great to have a home grown source of cacao beans. I'd have to grow it in a large container tho. Well, first I'd have to find a source!

Patrina, It's not possible to grow them outdoors, It's just too cold in winter. An ideal environment would be one that doesn't get cooler than 14C. At 4C they will suffer. At 0-2C they are history. However, if you have the room inside you could grow one in a tub by a sunny window. Would need a bit of space though. Best bet is to grow in a greenhouse.
Limberlost in Qld. mail order seedlings for about $10? plus freight. Coffee would be a much safer option. It will grow outdoors in Adelaide if you can find a sheltered, warm position. Good luck either way. Perry's may have some coffee seedlings or Limberlost will have them, or Daley's in NSW, Minimum $100 order there though.

Thanks for the info Wicky! I wish, oh how I wish, that I could be somewhere (Utopia, of course!) where I could grow all the delicious stuff that only grows in tropical areas, and where I wouldn't need to deal with humidity or fruit flies or fungal diseases, and where I could grow cold climate stuff like berries and.... and...

*sigh*

Patrina, you almost describe any one of hundreds of valleys 1500 meters high in the Mountains of Mexico, only problem is the fruit fly is there too : ) but if you had a block of land that went from 1500 to 2200? meters up the side of a mountain you could grow Mangos, Papaya, Lychee, Bananas etc at the bottom and your Cherries up the top and everything else in between. There are places even in Australia that in theory will fruit a Cherry and a Mango 10 meters apart no problem. The right spot in the Adelaide hills would do the job for a start
