Tomato Question for PP

Posted by Mark_Wendy (My Page) on

Hi Patrina,
You were kind enough to send me some of Craig's "Little Lucky" seeds.
I noticed on the back of the envelope it said "4 + 1".
I planted all five seeds, of which four germinated.
Now that they are growing, I've got three which are PL and one is RL.
Could you tell me what the "4 + 1" designation is?

Mark

Hi Mark

The "4+1" was because four of the seeds looked good, but one didn't look viable, and rather than not send it I figured that it's always worth a try.... one never knows if a seed will germinate!

I think Little Lucky should be potato leaf - hopefully the info will be on the seed pack? The regular leaf one might be from a crossed seed, so if you're interested to see what the tomato will be like, you could still grow it.

Hi Patrina,

Thanks for your reply. I'm going to grow it out and find out if it is a mix up or a cross.

PS: SSAE on its way tomorrow.

Craig here checking in!

Anything regular leaf that comes up from either Little Lucky or Lucky Cross is either continuing segregation (I stabilized both from an accidental cross that occurred between Brandywine (potato leaf) and what I now think is Tad (regular leaf). The F1 was regular leaf, and though both Little Lucky and Lucky Cross are meant to be potato leaf, they are probably not completely stable, so an occasional reg leaf seedling can result - what they end up producing is likely to be interesting, but there are lots of possibilities as to shape, size and color!

Hi Craig,

Nice to meet you! Great to know you visit the Aussie website.
Thanks for your information. Looks like I'll have a mystery to share this season.
I'd like to thank you also for your generosity in sharing your tomato seed. Through Patrina, I now can trial varieties like Little Lucky, Lucky Cross and Green Giant.
Thanks once again Craig, Patrina and everyone one else who shares seed!

Mark
